NERALLT is a regional affiliate of IALLT, the International Association for Language Learning Technology. Our members are educators, administrators and technical support staff of spaces or initiatives in which technology enhances the teaching and learning of languages, literatures and cultures.

Although we serve the greater New England region, anyone is welcome to join this site and our organization.

iPads & Learning (Blume Center)

While still in discovery, Kellie and Sean believe they have found a way that iPads and other mobile tools can be used to enhance language learning. Please join us as we discuss and learn how iPads can be used to foster a collaborative classroom environment. This hands-on workshop will cover:

  • A demo of a collaborative app: Nearpod (with time to create and share)
  • Discuss, briefly, technical management (through Apple Configurator) 
  • Show & tell: 40+ apps identified for teaching and learning
  • Review of best practices for pilot, support, and training 
  • Learning outcomes

The Horizon Report and the Event Horizon: On the Future of Language Centers 

In this presentation I will discuss some of the institutional and technological challenges that Language Centers have faced and continue to experience in light of the technological changes presented in the Horizon Report. As language tools and resources have steadily migrated to the Internet and IT organizations have strengthened their instructional footprint, are Language Centers approaching the “event horizon”, the moment in which they are absorbed into the general campus IT infrastructure? is this an inevitable process or are there alternative outcomes? Using the Blume Center as a case study, I will present some ideas about ways in which we can potentially shape the future of the Language Center.

Digital Flashcards For Vocabulary: More Than Just a Wordlist

 Digital flashcards, that are both web and mobile viewable, not only make vocabulary lists more accessible and attractive to students, but also appeal to different learning styles and allow the addition of a cultural component, through simple features such as color, audio files and images.

Open Educational Resources: A Changing Landscape

 Since hosting an awareness week on Open Educational Resources and Creative Commons licensing, Kellie has continued working with her team to develop resources and ideas for how OER could benefit teaching and learning at SMC. In this presentation, Kellie, Instructional Technologist and Manager of the Language Learning Resource Center, will discuss and share:

  • Overview of OER/Creative Commons 
  • Faculty outlook on OER: What tools seem helpful?
  • Common questions and concerns 
  • Resource site and demo of sites for consuming/sharing

Real Game-Based Learning: Mapping Learning Objectives to Play Objectives

Roger Travis will present examples from his game-based courses in classics to demonstrate the problems and possibilities of game-based learning. Travis' courses are not video games in any conventional sense, but they make use of the affordances of the rulesets of the most popular videogames to engage students in telling the story of their learning.

On the Horizon:
The Future of Language Teaching and Learning Technologies


The 2012 Higher Education Edition of the Horizon Report
(http://net.educause.edu/ir/library/pdf/HR2012.pdf) is this year’s annual fall conference theme. First launched in 2002, and published annually, each Horizon Report is the culmination of the year-long effort of the New Media Consortium  and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) to assess and report on emerging technologies and their short-term and long-term implication for teaching and learning.

For 2012 they have identified six key trends within the following time frames for adoption by institutions of higher education:

One year or less

  • Mobile apps
  • Tablet computing

Two to three years

  • Game-based learning
  • Learning analytics

Four to five years

  • Gesture-based computing
  • Internet of things


We invite faculty and technology professionals to submit proposals that address any of these key trends, especially as they relate to:

  • Research
  • Teaching practices
  • Learning environments
  • Language, culture, and digital humanities
  • Learning support services, both physical and virtual


Types of Presentations:
NERALLT seeks presentation perspectives and formats which aim to engage the audience interactively such as:

  • 30 minute individual/group presentations (not including Q&A)
  • Roundtable discussions or panels (30 minutes with a maximum of 3 presenters and 15 minutes Q & A)
  • Electronic poster sessions
  • Workshops (1-2 hours, hands-on)
  • Lightning round sessions (5 minute presentation followed by facilitated group discussion)

Topic:

Tegrity, a course capture system, was implemented at Saint Michael's College in 2009.  Since then, this new technology has taken off and is being used by 40+ faculty and many students representing a wide-range of disciplines.  This session will touch upon the implementation/recruitment process of this tool and focus on how it is being used to enhance language learning in and out of the classroom for our Modern Languages Department and for our Intensive English Program. Participants will also learn how we regularly use Tegrity in the Language Learning Resource Center as a training and documentation tool.

Nerallt is now planning for our upcoming fall conference, which is typically held in mid-October. Our fall conference occurs on a Friday with a Thursday board meeting and the possibility of a Thursday afternoon workshop.
